Because we as Americans use more gas than the rest of the world combined. We drive these huge needless SUVs that need tremendous amounts of gas to operate. Basically we have used so much that the there is not that much left. We are dependant on getting it from other countries now and that drives the cost up. Sadly this will not get better. Interesting fact as well. Before the Iraq war a gallon of regular unleaded gas was at about a $1.50. Look where it is now only 5 years later.
